Introduction

Troy Bayliss continues his association with the Ducati MotoGP Team for a second successive year after setting the 2003 MotoGP championship alight in his debut season with some scintillating rides. Determination and courage are the main characteristics of Ducati MotoGP Team's Australian star; a champion who is destined to play a key role in MotoGP just as he did in Superbike. Troy is perfectly aware of his talent and potential and this allows him never to be overawed by the opposition. In his first MotoGP season, the Australian was aiming mainly to accumulate experience as he embarked on a difficult learning curve.
Despite the fact that he had never seen many of the circuits on the calendar, he was able to express his talent immediately and earn a place on the podium. Troy scored a superb fifth place with the Desmosedici on his MotoGP debut at Suzuka and then cemented his reputation by battling for the lead with eventual champion Rossi in the second race of the season at Welkom in South Africa.
Other brilliant results followed throughout the year, including three third-place podium finishes at Jerez, Sachsenring and Brno, and the Australian eventually finished sixth overall, just losing out on the "Rookie of the Year" award after a crash at Phillip Island. 2003 was also an unforgettable year for Troy from a family point of view. The birth of his third child, Olly, during the Rio GP, completes this portrait of a champion rider, who is closely tied to the family, his inseparable wife Kim and their other two children, Mitchell (7) and Abbey (5).
