The By Any Means adventure was the brainchild of Russ Malkin, director and expedition leader, and Boorman. Having completed Long Way Round and Long Way Down with Ewan McGregor, on motorbikes, they wanted to turn their hands to a new challenge, to make their way from Ireland to
Australia. Never ones to do it the conventional way, the pair wanted to experience how people travelled before commercial aircraft was so readily available, and in doing so they travelled on as many different forms of transport as they could get their hands on. Charley, Russ and cameraman
Mungo, departed from Charley’s home town of Wicklow in Ireland to embark on an epic journey which saw them pass through twenty five countries, and clocking up over 100 forms of transport.
The DVD (Cert. 15) follows Charley and the crew as they encounter engaging characters, experience fascinating cultures and beautiful landscapes, whilst travelling on a variety of forms of transport including everything from a dug-out canoe to a container ship and of course Charley’s old favourite,
the motorbike! The DVD extras include additional footage from the adventure, a post-travel interview with Charley, an interactive map and also an extensive photo gallery from the trip.
As always, with any adventure involving Charley Boorman, is both entertaining and educational and bound to appeal to a wide audience, over 2 million visitors watched each week when the programme aired on BBC2. Over 6 hours footage with exclusive DVD extras, a great gift idea.
