Sena SMH10 vs. Scala Rider G4 Motorcycle Bluetooth Intercom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZGa6J6zYAE
Introduction
Gone are the days of riding with the only sound you are likely to hear are the side-winds or the sound of your exhaust. With the ever-increasing technology available entertainment, phone calls and passenger intercom are more commonplace with todays biker. However, (risk warning!) please ensure any such device is used responsibly and does not distract you from being vigilant to your surroundings, an essential part of any motorcyclist. Ok, with the boring stuff out of the way, let’s start the review……
Sena are a relatively new name in the “motorcycle communication devices” market but don’t let this fool you, their motorcycle Bluetooth headset & intercom product, the “SMH10 Dual” performs very well and delivers the performance you would expect from an established company working within this field.
Firstly, virtually all the functions are controlled using one button and a simple dial to control the volume (very wide volume range – excellent), ease of use is a key selling point here.
Sound quality, clarity and volume control are all very good and better than anything we have previously tested.
The module and headset are water resistant and fit easily into your helmet, although the speakers do feel a little heavy compared to others. Turning the unit on and off is a doddle. Range is very good and can be paired with a phone, sat-nav and even an MP3 player, what more could you ask? A 3.5mm jack is also provided for those that prefer ‘wired’ connectivity.
A useful feature is the VOX system which you need to activate, when the system is not being used it automatically turns itself off and uses voice activation to turn on again, very useful for preserving battery life and maintaining communications all day long.
The range of the SMH10 is superb, a whopping 900m (over ½ mile)! Some may argue that is only in ideal conditions but nonetheless impressive and we can vouch for the effectiveness, far better than many other motorcycle intercoms on the market! If the link is broken the system cleverly attempts to restore the link at regular intervals.
Obviously, performance may vary depending on the make of helmet used but we tested it on a number of helmets and the SMH10 delivered every time, with the wide ranging volume control you can adapt it to suit the environment.
Charging is achieved via a 12v cigarette lighter, that may be charged whilst being used.
Summary
The choice of motorcycle intercom systems is increasing all the time and technology continues to improve all the time. You could do far worse than the SMH10 and its ease of use is a real plus point, it’s all too easy to become distracted whilst riding from the various functions offered by alternative products.
We only tested a pair but they can also be used to simultaneously four devices, handy for group riding, which we understand to be very simple to set up.
We tested the SMH10 over a period of a couple of weeks and used it extensively throughout this time and it delivered 100% of the time, no failures, no breakdowns, does exactly what it says on the tin!
At £299 the dual-pack may not be cheap but you get what you pay for and this unit performs more than adequately, in fact we would say it is outstanding and the best we have tested to date. Good value and worth the investment.
Recommended.
