1955 Matchless 498cc Model
G45
Based on the Model G9 Super Clubman vertical
twin, a one-off racing twin was produced in
time for the 1951 Manx Grand Prix, on which
Robin Sherry came 4th at 83.71mph.
For 1952, the first Model G45 came into being,
the engine still recognisably G9 based but housed
in a 7R AJS based frame etc. This time Derek
Farrant won the MGP at 88.65mph. Thus encouraged,
AMC Ltd, put the G45 into production and itwas
shown at Earls Court in November.
As a production racer it performed well and
no less than 17 of them lined up on the Glencrutchery
Road for the start of the 1955 Senior TT, best
placing being a very creditable 6th, by Derek
Ennett at 92.54mph.
