Yamaha builds a high-performance 650 motorcycle
and gives it "special" styling. Although
other makers had dabbled with the cruiser get-up
laid over basic Japanese four-cylinder motorcycles,
no other manufacturer had made the million-dollar
commitment: design a brand-new four-cylinder,
and build it specifically as a special. At Yamaha
the special became the standard. |

1982 Yamaha XJ650 Turbo |

Turbocharging puts new life in the Yamaha 650cc
engine; although the Turbo is just three-tenths
of a second quicker than the standard 650 at the
drag strip, that figure is deceiving. When the
engine comes on the boost, the power surge is
astonishing, and the Turbo tops out at speeds
that standard Seca owners can reach only in Fantasyland. |

Yamaha XJ650 Turbo |

With its world’s first carburetor turbo
system, the XJ650 Turbo was quick to draw attention
at the 1981 Tokyo Motor Show. This, added to
the introduction of the electronic fuel injection
turbo system on the XJ1100 Turbo, focused much
attention on Yamaha’s turbo technology.
The aerodynamically designed full faring was
the product of repeated wind-tunnel tests and
employed much of the modeling technology and
know-how from Yamaha’s marine division.
