Here we have the 1971 Harley Davidson XLH
in its factory optional alter ego with the fiberglass
boat tail seat section that was available for
a $60 up charge. There is a shorty fender under
the tail that is painted to match. The reflector
sticker usually says "Sportster" as well as
the decal near the brake, but in this case it
also says Harley Davidson as well. The turtle
tank looks and fits much better than the peanut
tank next to the Tail section.

The 1978 XL1000 was an anniversary model and
was trimmed accordingly. Gold trim, leather
and gleaming black help the Anniversary E of
the 1978 XLH stand from a crowd. Seventy-five
years of uninterrupted production were marked
in 1978, and several birthday editions were
sold to commemorate the anniversary. Of these
bikes, the XL1000 was trimmed with gold and
had a saddle upholstered in leather. |

In 1986, the Sportsters not only got the new
V2 motor in their frames, but the XL buyer had
a choice of two displacements. Either 883 or
1100 were seen in the latest XLH model, providing
a new level of fitment for the smaller or beginning
rider. Producing 53 and 63 horsepower respectively,
both versions were coupled to a four-speed gearbox.
The XLH-1100 sold for about $5,200 in 1986,
which placed it more than $1,000 over its smaller
XLH-883 sibling in the price line. A set of
two instruments and buckhorn bars made the 1100
easier to differentiate from the smaller 883
variant.
