HARLEY-DAVIDSON UNLEASHES SOFTAIL® ROCKER™ ,DYNA® FAT BOB® AND EUROPEAN XL 1200N NIGHTSTER™ 105th Anniversary Models and ABS Option for FL and VRSC™ Models for 2008

Harley-Davidson is taking factory-custom motorcycle design to a new extreme with the introduction of three new models worldwide and the introduction of a new model to the European Sportster® line-up.  Two versions of a radical long custom called Softail® Rocker™ will be offered for 2008 -  the unadorned base model and the chromed-out Softail® Rocker™ C.  The Dyna model family also gets a brawny new member in the form of the Fat Bob®.   These three new Big Twin (1584cc) models are additions to an increasingly diverse line of motorcycles for 2008. This year also sees the European launch of the Sportster® XL1200N Nightster, offering a head-turning combination of torquey performance and an underground urban feel .  The 2008 line-up also includes 8 models available in limited-edition 105th Anniversary livery, each of which is serial-numbered. A host of technical refinements for 2008 includes the availability of an all-new Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) as an option on Touring and VRSC™ models.

“Only Harley-Davidson could style and engineer a motorcycle as visually exciting as the new Softail Rocker,” said Bill Davidson, director of motorcycle product development and great-grandson of one of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s founders. “To offer this level of custom style in a reliable, rideable production motorcycle is simply unprecedented. We’ve also got the Fat Bob taking the Dyna platform in a bold, new direction, and a special European version of the XL 1200N Nightster – featuring longer travel rear suspension created specifically for improved cornering clearance on European roads. The beautiful copper-and-black 105th Anniversary models are the icing on the Motor Company birthday cake for 2008.”

Harley-Davidson motorcycles have stoked the passion of riders around the world for over a century with a distinctive combination of look, sound and feel that simply can not be duplicated. In recognition of the 105th Anniversary, selected Harley-Davidson anniversary edition motorcycles will feature exclusive detailing such as unique Anniversary Copper and Vivid Black two-tone paintwork, a copper Bar and Shield tank cloisonné and 105th Anniversary badges on the air cleaner and timing cover inserts.  These models will also be available in non-anniversary edition form.

Highlights of the 2008 Harley-Davidson® line include:

The new FXCW Softail® Rocker™ and FXCWC Softail® Rocker™ C feature the new RockertailTM rear end that mounts a form-fitting fender directly to the swingarm over a wide 240mm tyre. The result is a reproduction of the authentic lines of a slammed ‘hardtail’ custom (a clean style of custom motorcycle from a bygone era featuring no rear suspension) with the comfortable ride of a concealed modern suspension as the rear wheel and fender move together. The Rocker comes with a solo seat and a monochrome, satin stainless metallic paint scheme. The Rocker C is a chromed-out beauty with an innovative Trick SeatTM that conceals an easy to install passenger pillion under a solo cushion, so riders can opt for a minimal solo look or a stylish two-up ride.

Twin headlights mounted on beefy 49mm front forks signal the arrival of the massive new Dyna® Fat Bob®. The new Tommy Gun exhaust speaks pure performance, while a new seat shape and drag bars put the rider in a position that’s instant cool. Black fork lowers and handlebar risers, and a new, aggressive tread pattern on 180mm rear tyres and 130mm front tyres, reinforce the massive street presence of this new model.

By blending a unique new style with the power and torque of the isolation-mounted Evolution V-Twin engine, the new XL 1200N Nightster™ offers a sharp ride for the street. Stripped down and gritty, the blacked-out Nightster reinterprets the Sportster legend with rugged, minimal neo-retro styling. A solo seat adds to the uncluttered look, as do clipped front and rear fenders that expose chunky tyres. First introduced to the U.S. market early in 2007, the European version features longer travel rear suspension for improved lean angles on Europe’s twisting roads and a neat new LED stop/turn/tail light design that is the last word in minimal style.

A limited-edition 105th Anniversary package of shimmering Anniversary Copper and Vivid Black paint, a seat with a copper-colored insert, a special copper air cleaner cover insert, plus other exclusive badging will be offered on 8 different 2008 Harley-Davidson® models. Production of these motorcycles will be limited and serial numbered.

A new Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) is standard equipment on the 2008 Ultra Classic™ Electra Glide® (and on the 105th Anniversary Edition of that model), the 105th Anniversary Edition Road King® Classic, the Custom Vehicle Operations® (CVO) Screamin’ Eagle® Ultra Classic™ Electra Glide® and Screamin’ Eagle® Road King®, and is available as a factory-installed option on all other Touring and VRSC models (subject to availability).

Both VRSC™ models get a power and torque boost from a high-performance, 1250cc version (previously 1130cc) of the liquid-cooled Revolution® V-Twin engine tuned to make up to 123 horsepower and 85 ft.-lbs. of torque 115Nm. The engine is mated to a new slipper-style clutch with lighter lever action. A new Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) is offered as a factory-installed option on all 2008 VRSC™ models (subject to availability).

A new six-gallon/22.7 litre fuel tank extends the range of all Touring models and new seats offer added long haul comfort.  For 2008, new Brembo® brakes are standard equipment on all Touring models.  ABS is offered as standard on the 2008 Ultra Classic™ Electra Glide® (and on the 105th Anniversary Edition of that model), the 105th Anniversary Edition Road King® Classic, the Custom Vehicle Operations® Screamin’ Eagle® Ultra Classic™ Electra Glide® and Screamin’ Eagle® Road King®, and is available as a factory-installed option on all other Touring models (subject to availability). Cruise control is now a factory-installed feature on all versions of the Ultra Classic™ Electra Glide® models, the FLHX Street Glide® and the Road King® Classic.  All 2008 Touring models now feature a new Isolated Drive System that reduces noise and vibration to the rider for improved ride quality under acceleration, shifting and cruising.

The high-performance Twin Cam 110 engine powers four 2008 models from Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO): the Screamin’ Eagle® Road King®, the Screamin’ Eagle® Ultra Classic™ Electra Glide®, the Screamin’ Eagle® Softail® Springer®, and the Screamin’ Eagle® Dyna®. Each features a host of new accessories and stunning custom paint schemes.

Harley-Davidson will offer 16 new colour combinations for 2008.
