Ducati 999 - 2005
For 2005, the basic 999 has undergone major restyling. While maintaining the bike's acclaimed exclusive design, the host of innovations introduced have also led to significant improvements in ridability and efficiency. The fairing been redesigned in size and shape to provide better wind protection for the rider and Cx is now lower as a result. A new box section swing arm has also been fitted and makes the 999 look meaner than ever. The new swing arm is lighter than the previous one and gives even the basic 999 a look almost identical to that of the Ducatis that dominate the world racing scene.
Chassis
The heart of the 999's chassis remains the now traditional Ducati tubular steel trellis frame, specifically designed as the perfect match for the Testastretta engine. The 999's chassis has been further improved by the arrival of the new box section swing arm. This major innovation is destined to make the 999 even more precise and controllable over all types of road and track surfaces. The new swing arm is derived directly from Ducati's racing experience and is lighter and more rigid. All other aspects of the 999's acclaimed chassis have been reconfirmed for the 2005 model. The 999 therefore still provides a wide range of adjustments for handlebar lever position and footrest position, plus the special eccentric mechanism for changing the rake angle of the steering head. The 999's impressive equipment list includes a steering damper that adapts to both steering head angles plus top quality suspensions. The basic 999 is fitted with Showa rear monoshock and upside down fork with TiN coated stanchions. Both units are fully adjustable.
Engine
Its new engine is one of the most important innovations on the new 999, and a major step forward in terms of performance. The 2004 engine has been replaced with the unit that was fitted previously only to the 999S. The entry-level 999's power unit is therefore a deep sump Testastretta. This is Ducati's latest engine development and features a high efficiency sump that permits increased angles of lean. This sports engine previously reserved for the middle of the range model has given the basic 999 a major boost in power, taking figures to 140 HP at 9,750 and 11.1 kgm of torque at 8,000 rpm. This represents a power increase of 10 percent, and confirms Ducati's determination to give riders the most race-oriented motorcycles on the market.
