BMW R1100 S
The BMW R1100 S is much more than the
sum of its parts. It is a sports motorcycle
that dares to be different. It has that indefinable
something – “something” that has attracted the
world’s most respected riders and “something”
that inspired the popular and spectacular International
BoxerCup race series. Essentially though, the
R1100 S is a BMW in the honoured tradition –
a quality motorcycle built uncompromisingly
for the road – but with true sports capability.
The lightest and most agile of all BMW’s boxer
machines, the R1100 S is the most dynamic yet.
A RRP of £7,745 on the road also makes the
R1100 S excellent value for money.
Power punch
The four valves per cylinder, air/oil-cooled
horizontal twin is the most powerful production
boxer engine in BMW’s history. The high-compression
four-valve boxer engine features optimised air
intake, forged pistons and the latest generation
of digital engine electronics. It also has magnesium
cylinder heads for reduced weight. The engine
develops a punchy 98bhp (72kw) and an equally
impressive 97Nm of torque at 5,750 rpm.
Power from the engine is transmitted to the
road through a new, close-ratio six-speed gearbox
and BMW’s ultra-reliable drive shaft. Light,
precise gearshift action and extremely well
chosen ratios mean that abundant pulling power
is available to the rider under all road and
traffic situations.
Visually, the R1100 S engine is slightly different
to the other power units in BMW’s R-range. The
bolts on the magnesium cylinder heads are new
and there are three protruding fins on the lower
half of the head. The word “Magnesium” is inscribed
on both rocker covers.
Road and track
Despite the R1100 S’s undoubted track capabilities
most owners will only ever ride the S on the
road. The bike’s strength is its practicality
and versatility over other machines of the sports
genre.
Unlike many hybrid sport motorcycles the S
handles as superbly off the track as it does
on. Telelever, the most significant advance
in front wheel suspension of the last decade,
and other dedicated components, enable the R1100
S to continue the BMW tradition of producing
motorcycles with unsurpassed road holding.
Ultimate braking
Increasing the power output of the new R1100
S also meant upgrading an already good braking
system. The new EVO front brake is a significant
advance in motorcycle brake technology and by
fitting it as standard to the R1100 S, BMW has
fulfilled a commitment to produce the safest
sports motorcycle available.
EVO front braking requires approximately half
the manual pressure to achieve the same stopping
power as a conventional system. Braking is further
improved by equipping the R1100 S with two larger
front discs (320mm/12.6 inches) and sintered
brake pads. This combination produces an increase
in braking forces of between 15 and 20 per cent.
The intelligent, third generation integral
ABS system is an after-market option that perfectly
compliments the new EVO system and is unique
to the sport genre.
Riding for real
The R1100 S is a sports motorcycle that will
enable its rider to undertake any, on the road,
two-wheel task with confidence. The S makes
few compromises in the roles it can assume,
irrespective of extremes or whether this means
commuting, or touring.
The tractability of the R1100 S in town is
matched by its adaptability on a long run. An
18-litre tank (of which 4 litres are “reserve”)
means that the S can achieve a practical touring
range approaching 200 miles, depending on the
type of riding.
To enhance the sports-touring capabilities
of the R1100 S, BMW has provided a number of
general and touring options. These include pannier
case holders and the spacious BMW system cases,
heated grips, raised handlebars and high windscreen.
R1100 S Sport BoxerCup replica
A special sports version of BMW’s R1100 S is
available for £8,495 on the road which – in
addition to the standard equipment – includes
sports suspension, a 5.5 inch rear wheel rim
and sport decals. It comes in a special Randy
Mamola BoxerCup blue/white design.
