Isle of Man Speed Limit Deferred - November 12th 2004

Transport Minister John Shimmin MHK, announced today that the proposal of an all Island speed limit had been deferred, as a result of the public reaction to the road safety consultation exercise by the Department of Transport.

However, the department is to pursue a wide range of initiatives including raising the driving test age from 16 to 17, reducing the legal blood alcohol level for driving, extending the 'R' plate period for new drivers from one to two years and tighter enforcement of existing laws against unsafe driving.

It has also vowed to renew emphasis on education, training and public awareness, as well as the periodic testing of older vehicles.

Mr Shimmin said, that he would be returning to the all island speed limit proposal again in the future.
